Many different materials are used, but the most commonly used materials for t-shirts are cotton and polyester
This fabric is without a doubt the most widely used fabric used today to make t-shirts, but you should be aware that there are a few different types of cotton for making t-shirts.
< br> Types of cotton:
Combed cotton is created when short threads are eliminated, after which some very fine brushes straighten the fibers. This makes the fabric softer, smoother and stronger. This is still the most common.
Pima cotton is known to be the highest quality cotton that money can buy, with extra long fibers that ensure the softness of the t-shirt fabric. Pima cotton is durable - it resists peeling, fading and stretching. Supima is the same type of cotton as Pima, but it is grown specifically in the United States.
But whether the extra price versus the other two types can be justified, that's a whole other talk. You can feel a small difference and it is a bit stronger yes. Unfortunately, however, we saw that in the long run, it can not be justified. Although some would like to picture it for us.
Benefits of cotton t-shirts
Is a natural material
Is a renewable resource
Is great for sensitive skin
Is extremely soft
Does not require chemicals
Disadvantages of cotton t-shirts
It is more expensive to produce
More water is needed in production
Need larger areas of land to grow it < br> The price for the consumer is higher
Linen (Listen)Many linen t-shirts are produced. It comes from the flax plant, and the weave is structured. It is mostly used for summer clothes, due to its breathability and its light properties. In addition, linen is also moisture wicking and dries fairly quickly. The fabric is also stronger than cotton, however, it is not nearly as soft and delicious to the touch as cotton is. You will also find that it has to be ironed quite often.
Another fabric that is quite common for t-shirts is polyester. It dries quickly and there is no mildew (fungal infestation). Polyester is also really good for maintaining its shape without stretching. It is especially good for sports apparel companies as the properties are well suited for athletic pursuits. Polyester is a synthetically produced fabric and contains fabrics i.a. fabrics such as Nylon, acetate and acrylic.
Polyester is very durable and dries quickly after a wash. In addition, it is also flexible, cost-effective. It can potentially be recycled and blended with cotton. Although there are some positive properties of polyester, there are unfortunately also negative ones that drag down a lot. Polyester degrades very slowly, it is not easy to breathe through, and it can release plastic microfibers when washed, which in turn causes water pollution.
Rayon (viscose) Rayon (viscose) is another fiber which is created from cellulose, which has then been subjected to a number of chemical treatments. It was created as an affordable alternative to silk. Rayon is a man-made fiber formed from trees, plants and cotton. What you get in the end is a breathable fabric that feels silky and effortless. It colors well and it is absorbent. However, it wrinkles easily and is unfortunately not known as the most environmentally conscious solution.
Lycra is a very well known name, but it is actually spandex. It is used as an additive to other t-shirt materials. It is used to give t-shirts more stretch, and it is very often found in sportswear, as it wears less and provides easier movement. You're thinking now, you forgot Bamboo, because I bought a sustainable bamboo t-shirt. It is true that the bamboo plant is enormously sustainable and under the right conditions it can grow one meter a day. There are positive things about bamboo, but what few people know, there are also some negative things about the production of t-shirts (clothes) from bamboo. Bamboo clothing is super delicious and soft to the touch, but can also be antibacterial. Unfortunately, there is also viscose in bamboo fabric, which is one of the least environmentally conscious fabrics. In addition, it is chemically treated so that we get the substance as we know it. So while there are many who will sell you bamboo clothing as the brand new environmentally conscious product, it is a truth with a POWERFUL modification. Fortunately, in recent years, people have become better at making the process better and less harmful to the environment. However, there is still a long way to go before bamboo clothing can be called the best eco-friendly fabric.
